I Am Mother

Until a recent general improvement in story output, the problem with many Netflix productions seemed to be an eschewing of rigorous script assessment, likely attributable to the subscription model prioritising quantity over quality.

I Am Mother, a Netflix production from 2018, starts out as a first rate sci-fi mystery, overturning at regular intervals the viewer’s perceptions of who everyone is and what they are doing. Then it loses its way, like so many before it, and fails to find a satisfying resolution to its themes and questions. It also labours under the weight of its influences. Excellent production otherwise, with a worthwhile theme, and to be encouraged despite its too-familiar flaws.
